Touche of the Day: Game Dev Tycoon School Pirates with a Clever In-Game Event

Greenheart Games has come up with a clever, refreshing way to discourage its patrons from pirating video games. Minutes after releasing their latest title Game Dev Tycoon last Sunday, the developers intentionally leaked a free “cracked” version of the game on a torrent site, and with the help of a few seeding friends, more than 3,104 users, or nearly 94% of all players, had downloaded the illegal copy within the first day. What none of them had realized is that the “cracked” version was designed for failure: after a few hours of gameplay, the player’s virtual game development company’s titles would become victims of piracy themselves, causing them to slowly go bankrupt.

I invited him to the performance because we shared 12 years of work, but I had no idea he was going to sit. So when he sat in front of me it was really so emotional, everybody could see because it was reflecting everything we went through together. In one of our performances, “The Night Sea Crossing,” we sat across from each other and he could not do it and I could. That’s why I replaced him with the public. I didn’t think he would ever sit in the chair opposite me, so when he did, I broke all the rules. I just thought that in that place at that moment there were no rules. I just needed to hold his hand and feel togetherness in that moment, which was very emotional.

We started Death Grips being very pro-homosexual and pro-individual— the idea of being OK with yourself no matter what. It really has to do with acceleration— culturally, on a world level— of sexuality in general, and getting past homophobia. People should be able to look deeper into something rather than just seeing some dick. It’s also a spiritual thing; it’s fearlessness.

As a group, we’re perceived in large part as male or very aggressive, but we don’t think about those things. There is no gender to this group. It’s androgynous. But we know that perception. Peoples’ hangups with sexuality, gender, and nudity— it’s similar to how I feel about organized religion. It’s toxic and poisonous to the human mind, and the development of humans in the modern world. In our own modest way, through our artwork, that’s what it represents: pushing past everything that makes people slaves without even knowing it.

You go to school, and try really hard, so that you can get into a good college, and then you try really hard at college to get a good job, and then you try really hard at your job, so you can make money. And then your kids do the same thing. And everyone just keeps on doing this and no one even stops to think WHY they’re doing it anymore. Everyone just does it because it’s what you’re supposed to do. And like, before, when the human race had just started, the goal was to just SURVIVE. People just lived. I mean, that’s what really matters, right? Survival. Because after you die, it doesn’t matter what college you went to.”
